Moondust, In Search of the Men who Fell to Earth by Andrew Smith; 2005; 372 pages; Fourth Estate, New York, NY; 0-00-715541-7; 3/13/09-3/24/09
This is not about David Bowie, the Man who fell to Earth, but about the 12 men who walked on the moon. When Andrew Smith started this project there were 10 still alive but Pete Conrad died in a motorcycle accident. Smith chases the 9 men around the globe trying to get a few minutes of their time he also speaks with the men who piloted the command module around the moon. Some of them are very reclusive and rarely speak in public anymore, some have found religion, one has become a artist, and a couple are way out there. The book was pretty good but got bogged down in quoting some of the astronauts verbatim. Buzz Aldrin in particular almost wanted to make me give up on the book. I stuck it out though and overall the book is pretty good in answering the question, How do you follow going to the moon?. The biggest answer is you don’t, although most of the men have tried in various ways to fill that void.
