World Wrestling Insanity, The Decline and Fall of A Family Empire by James Guttman; 2006; 235 pages; ECW Press, Toronto, Ontario, Canada;978-1-55022-728-4;4/20/09-4/22/09
James Guttman takes a look at how the McMahon family has made a monopoly of pro wrestling in the United States and how that hasn’t been good for the product itself or the viewers. When there is no competition there is no reason to be innovative or competitive, because there is no one to compete. Eventually it is not good for the wrestlers either, because these entertainers really have no where else to go if Vince and the family decide they can’t use them anymore, it also prevents the wrestlers from having good health care, or any kind of insurance because they are treated as independent contractors. While I enjoy wrestling I look back with fondness to the days when there was more story, less promo and a reason for two or more wrestlers to rassle. Guttman makes his points with a liberal dose of sarcasm, which can be a little overbearing at times, but most of his points are valid ones. RRR
