Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris; 2006; 96 pages; Alfred A. Knopf, New York, NY; 0-307-26577-3; 5/11/09-5/12/09
After writing The End of Faith, Sam Harris received many letters from Christians condemning him and telling him he was going to Hell. They were highly critical of him and told him in no certain terms that no one should be critical of the Bible, often citing chapter and verse to make their point.
He takes many old testament passages and says many people still believe them today, picking and choosing the ones that are covered by grace. His major argument is that medicine, technology and other things have progressed with the times, but that religion, (most of them) are still relying on text that were written thousands of years ago and have no relevance to today. His faith is in reason and that to me seems to me to take more faith than faith in a historical record and a living God. There are many things that can’t be proved and have to be taken on faith. I choose to believe that God created earth and all on it. I don’t know if he created it as it now, or if there were different creatures here at one time or if he has done this before. Mr Harris chooses to believe that the earth was accidentally created and we evolved from the primordial ooze. To him there is enough evidence to support this conclusion, to me there is not. There are questions that we may never know the answers to or we may in the afterlife, if there is one. A well written treatise on everything Sam Harris believes and has faith in. I believe that we have all been given free will to believe and have faith in what we will. RR
