Long Lost by Harlan Coben; 2009; 374 pages; Dutton, New York, NY; 978-0-525-95105-6; 5/20/09-5/21/09
Myron Bolitar and Win are back with a globe trotting vengeance. These two are tighter than two brothers. Out of the blue Myron gets a call from an old lover, who asks him to leave Jersey and come to Paris to help her. Myron goes because he loves her, even though at first he tries to convince himself that he doesn’t. That is where all the trouble begins, as Myron is targeted by, well, just about everyone, on both sides of the law. Homeland Security, the Mossad, the French Police and some jihadist, who have figured out how to blend in. Myron, Win and the action run from Paris to London to New Jersey, back again and end up in Africa. There are lots of long lost secrets and relationships tied together, it’s like Myron is trying to follow all the strands of a spider web at the same time. Harlan has created several new memorable characters, my favorite won’t ever be back though. OK take Space Mountain, throw in one or two corkscrews coasters, one of the those where things seem to calm down for a second before you are slung forward, pressed tightly to your seat as your legs dangle up and then down, put that all in a darkened room and that is the feeling you will get as you read long lost. Give yourself lots of time to read this, cause like that roller coaster you are not going to want to let go until the ride is over. Watch for the reference to a movie starring Harlan and Kristin Scott Thomas. RRRR
PS. Now I have to wait at least for another year for another book from Harlan, although the wait is always worth it.
