A Tale of Daring Iniative

Rifleman Dodd by C.S. Forester; 1996; 158 pages; U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C.; The United States Marine Corps Reading Program; Interlibrary Loan from Southern Oregon University, Ashland, OR.; 5/23/09-5/27/09

This is another book from the United States Marine Corps reading list.  I am amazed by the breadth of this list, some very factual and some science fiction, (Enders’ Game).

Rifleman Dodd is the tale of a member of the English Army as the fight in Portugal against the French.  Dodd gets separated from his unit and trapped behind enemy lines.  He attempts to get back to his unit, but he realizes that he will be able to harass the French from behind their own lines.  So with the help of the Portuguese irregulars, he is able to work his way back to his unit while conducting some guerrilla warfare along the way.  The point the USMC is trying to make is to use your own initiative if necessary to accomplish the goals of the group if necessary.  A point that could be used in any endeavor.  RRR
