I Am Not a Cop by Richard Belzer; 2008; 261 pages; Simon & Schuster, New York, NY; 978-1-4165-7066-0; 5/30/09-6/3/09

My first memory of Richard Belzer is seeing him do stand up in Fame.  Then I remember him as Munch on Homicide.  Now he is part of a very good ensemble cast on Law and Order SVU.

In his third book Richard Belzer cast himself as the main character in a police procedural.  His friend Rudy, a medical examiner, invites Belz to go to a championship fight to see one of his countrymen fight a heavyweight fight.  Rudy never shows up but the cops find his bloody jacket and a ticket stub.  Once Belzer finds out he starts investigating the disappearance.  He receives a mysterious note from his friend, meets a beautiful woman who says she is his friends long lost illegitimate daughter, is assigned a keeper, and does martial arts with one of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lees’ costars.  The plot involves the Russian mafiya, blood and synthetic diamonds, the FSB and much subterfuge.  All the time Belzer is being reminded that he is not a cop and mistaken for everyone from William Peterson to Billy Bob Thornton.  He maintains that wonderful sardonic attitude that he has given Munch in all his appearances.  An entertaining cross between a police procedural and a Hollywood inside look.  RRR
