Curiosity is Going to Kill Reacher someday

Gone Tomorrow by Lee Child; 2009; 421 pages; Delacorte Press, New York, NY; 978-0-385-34057-1; 7/20/09-7/22/09

Reacher is on a subway train at 2 in the morning when he see a woman who exhibits all the signs of a suicide bomber.  He approaches her to confront her and perhaps to prevent a bombing, when she takes a gun out of her bag and sticks in her mouth and pulls the trigger.  Reacher is then questioned by the NYPD, the FBI, DoD and some guys in suits who never reveal who they are.  They mention a senators name and that gets Reacher curious, Jack is like a dog with a bone, he won’t let go until he has the answer and solved the problem.  Al Qaeda and the US Government are both after the same thing, a photo showing a couple of American operatives with Osama Bin Laden, from when he was pretending to be a friend of America.  Both want to supress the picture, all kinds of alphabet soup agencies are chasing Reacher, but when chasing Reacher you had better make sure that he is not actually chasing you.  Lots of action and a lesson that you should never be without duct tape.

I like Lee Childs’ series featuring Jack Reacher because Reacher has the freedom to do what he wants and helps those who need it.  The series is not unlike the TV shows The Fugitive, Leverage, McGyver, The A Team and many more where people use their unusual skills to help those in need.  Reacher keeps getting pulled in because he can’t let the bad guys win.  Eventually his curiosity and wanting to help is going to get him killed when he can’t find anyone to help him and he goes up against a group too big to go up against.  RRRR
