Bringing the disregarded to light

Buffalo Soldiers in the West, A Black Soldiers Anthology Edited by Bruce A. Glasrud and Michael N. Searles; 2007; 319 pages; Texas A&M University Press, College Station, TX; 978-1-58544-620-9; checked out from Multnomah County Library, Central Library; 12/2-12/11

At the time of service many service people and what they accomplished are disregarded due to many reasons, the reason here being racism.  The African American troops known as Buffalo Soldiers served all over the southwest part of the United States working to quell hostilities between Native Americans and settlers.  It seems the hostilities were as often against the Native Americans as the settlers. This volume collects a series of essays gathered into 4 categories, The Officers and the Troops, The Black Soldier, Discrimination and Violence, and the Community of Soldiers.  This series of essays taught me many things that I did not know previously about the service of the Buffalo Soldiers in the Southwest, Cuba and the Philippines.  RRR
