Hey I just wondered if those of you reading this could help me find a trio of old friends. I am looking for two friends from high school and an exchange student from Japan who lived with us for a year.
1.Pat Vann Pat and I went to the same church youth group in high school and then he moved away and we lost touch.
2. Nancy Moshofsky We were good friends in high school and unfortunately we lost touch. Last I knew I think she lived in San Francisco.
3.Maki Sano Maki, or Katie, as we called her the year she was with us was an exchange student from Fujinomyia. We grew very attached and the four of us have never forgotten her and we would love to hear from her again.

If you know any of these people please leave a comment for me. Thanks for your help.

A straight forward account of the defense of the Phillipines, the Baatan Death March, captivity in Japanese prison camp and travel on the Japanese hell ships. I started to read it, but is written like a report to the higher echelons. I could not finish it, because of the way it was written.

I run a bookstore for the Multnomah County Library. The store is called the Title Wave Used Bookstore. The bookstore was begun in 1988, in response to the large number of discards the library had. First they burned the extra books, then one day the EPA decided that the air quality in Portland was less than desirable, so no more book burning. Then the library threw the books in dumpsters and contributed them to a local landfill. An enterprising TV reporter found out about it and followed the truck to the landfill and filmed the books cascading out of the truck. That ended that portion of the program rather quickly. Then the library donated the books to charitable organizations, who were either overwhelmed or only wanted certain books. Then they tried weekend book sales and still had many left over. In March of 1988 after proposing the idea many times, the Title Wave opened.

It is housed in an orginal Carneige Library. Back in the early part of the 20th century Andrew Carneige helped build libraries all over the world. There were several in the Portland area. Constructed in a Spanish Renaissance style the library was opened in 1912 as the Albina community library. As you walk up the stairs if you look at the light fixtures on each side of the stair you will see a rams head on each corner of the base. Looking above the front door is the seal of the Library Association of Portland, which existed until 1990 when the library became a part of Multnomah County. Looking to either right or left under the large windows is the seal of the State of Oregon. Under each window is both the front and back of the seal. The roof is covered in red brick tile in an inverted u shape. The outside of the building is covered in white stucco. As you stand before the 15 foot tall wooden doors with your hand on the bronze knob, you wonder what awaits you inside.

You pull open the big door and step into a foyer with a 20 foot ceiling and before you are two glass doors, which can be seen in Men of Honor. The Title Wave doubles as a Harlem library. As you grasp the slanted bronze bars on the door and push the glass doors open, you step into the main room of the library. Looking way, way up you see all sorts of fancy woodwork, all sorts of flowers and such. Three large frosted arched windows are on the back wall. Everywhere you look there are books. The twelve foot tall windows let in lots of light. As you stand in the center of the room and look straight ahead are the noted author’s books, to your left is fiction and to your right all the non fiction filed in Dewey Decimal order.

Why is that those I am the closest to are the ones that I get the most angry at. Last night the boys told me that they would have some stuff done before they went to bed. During the summer they usually go to bed after Ruth and I. I got up this morning to come to work and the stuff they had said they would do was only half done. Neither had good explanations. Really though in the greater scheme of things it doesn’t really matter, but I guess we are trying to train them that when they say they will do something that they follow through. I love them, but sometimes I am dissappointed and somethings they do upset me, when I know they shouldn’t and that I will miss them daily once they move out. Not soon I hope.

That is the song that is on the radio right now and I couldn’t think of a title. It is on the newest station in town Charlie FM, while we were in Eugene we found it’s brother station Bob FM.

This seems to be the new thing in radio format, no dj’s (yeah), a wide variety of music. The other day I heard Garth Brooks, The Macarena, Billy Idol, ABBA and KISS all in a row. Sounds like one of my homemade CD’s except for the Macarena.

This week has been pretty busy. I have been sorting books like crazy and trying to figure out how to get more people to buy so that we can make room for the even more we have in the back room. What we have in the store is the tip of the proverbial iceberg. We have had 25% off sales and today and tomorrow everything is 40% off. On July 23 everything will be at least 50% off (probably more).

Ruth Ann is coordinating a wedding for this Sunday and she is making the brides dress and the grooms Hawaiian shirt. She had a review at work and they couldn’t think of anything negative to say about her and she is getting another raise. We are going out tonight to celebrate. We are going to try a Japanese called Ichidai. I don’t care if Terry Bradshaw calls it bait, I love Sushi.

Dan and Dave are out of school for the summer and enjoying summer vacation very much. They have been watching movies and just hanging out.

So Brick House was followed by Friends in Low Places.

1. What are your first and middle names?
My first name is Rodney and my middle name is Earl

2. Are you named after anyone?
I am named after my two grandfathers. Rodney was my Dads’ Dad and Earl was my Moms’ Dad. They passed away within two weeks of each other when I was in High School in that order, boy I was scared for awhile.

3. Are you married with children?
I have been married to the lovely Ruth Ann since 1985. We knew each other for thirteen years before we got married. We went to different high schools together. She went to Churchill High School and I went to South Eugene. But we were in the same high school group together at Berean Baptist Church. I have two great sons, Dan and David. Dan is named for Dan Simons and Scott Lowe and was born in 1986. David is named for Dave Dravecky and was born in 1989.

4. What do you do for a living?
I work for the Multnomah County Library. The library has a used bookstore called the Title Wave Used Bookstore. It sells everything that the library can no longer use for a variety of reasons.

5. What do you do for fun?
I read. My sons’ say that I am a Chain Reader because as soon as I finish one book I pick up another.

6. When’s your birthday?
September 13, 1957. I share the day with a good friend, Dennis Simons. This year I am not looking forward to my birthday and it has nothing to do with my age.

7. What’s your favorite meal?
The Ohana Plate at Ohana Hawaiian Cafe.

8. Favorite time of day?
Late night, very early morning like 1AM out in the forest.

9. When did you last cry?
The last time I remember really crying hard was when I got to the climax of the story in Leslie Goulds’ book Garden of Dreams. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a synopsis. Leslie hasn’t written a bad book yet.

10. Who would you choose to look like if you could choose anyone?
Roy Rogers

11. What’s the most embarrassing CD you own?
Pure Disco

12. Are you a daredevil?
Only in what I read

13. How do you show anger?
I am getting better at this, counseling helps. If you have a problem, first admit, then seek help for it.

14. Where would you live if you could live anywhere?
Julian, California

15. Do you trust others easily?
I don’t think so. I think I have to know someone for awhile and have reason to trust them.

16. What was your favorite toy as a child?
Oggie Dog, a stuffed animal that I had until my brother got worms and we had to burn all out stuffed animals.

17. What’s your favorite toy as an adult?
Oggie Dog. Christmas of ’75 my brother got a stuffed dog that looked exactly like the Oggie of my youth. I cried and slept with him that night. Christmas of ’77 I got one also, I kept it until it wore out. Then I took it apart and it slept in Ruth Anns’ sewing room and then at Christmas of ’02 she rebuilt him and gave him to me. This Oggie is special because he is a reminder of my youth, (of which I don’t have to many memories) and he was made with lots of love by my loving wife.

18. What’s your favorite expression of humor?
A great big belly laugh

19. What’s the last movie you watched?
Right now December 25, 2006 we are watching Jurassic Park

20. Favorite movie genre?
Action or Johnny Depp

21. Favorite color?
Pacific Ocean Blue, San Diego Sand and Sky Blue

22. What do you think about most?
How I have messed up.

How I can better help those around me

24. Are you good at keeping secrets?
Yes, but don’t tell anyone.

25. If you had one wish, what would it be?
To be known as a strong Christ-follower. Not a Christian, but one who follows Christ in helping my neighbor, anyone I share the earth with. Love the unlovely.
